In the valley of the Dordogne, at the edge of the Corrèze and the Cantal, these curious geologic structures will intrigue you. Get to them by foot or car and take in the landscape that awaits you from the orientation table, or go and take a closer look at the rocks themselves…
Discover these immense volcanic cliffs
From the town centre at Bort-les-Orgues, admire these phonolitic cliffs which overlook the town for nearly 2km and which give the town its name. These gigantic columns of basalt rock are up to 100m high and look a bit like a weathered church organ.
An area of ecological interest
Nature lovers, discover these imposing organs! They shelter a protected flora and fauna. During a pleasant stroll through the undergrowth, observe the presence of isolated species in relation to their usual area of distribution: this is particularly the case with regards to the blue-celestial blue and the blue-pearly argus , two species of butterfly. Many rock loving raptors nest in the cliffs, such as the peregrine falcon or the booted eagle. The fragrant woodruff, a small lily of the valley, pleasantly lines the path during the spring and summer. For budding geologists, these volcanic organs, whose name is due to their ability to resonate when struck – Phonolite means “sounding stone”, will quickly become your favorite playground.
An exceptional panorama over the Dordogne and the Mounts of Auvergne
Majestic, they are considered the best observatory to see the Auvergne: at 789m altitude above the valley, this prestigious balcony offers a splendid view of the town of Bort-les-Orgues, the Sancy massif, the Artense plateau and the grassy plateaus of the Cézallier and Massif Central. The site is equipped with 2 viewpoints, picnic tables and a terrace with breathtaking views for a short break at its summer snack bar.
